Facebook Contests: 33 Cent Leads? A Case Study (Strategy #5)

What’s one of the single most effective strategies for generating leads on Facebook yet if not done properly can get you kicked off Facebook?

Running a contest.

That’s right.  Facebook contests are great because they provide incentive for people to take action and get involved with your brand.

But if you don’t follow Facebook’s contest guidelines it can get you into trouble with them, like them removing your page.

Granted, I’ve never heard of anyone’s page actually being taken down for this, but it’s clearly stated in their policies so you have to be careful.

I think that’s why a lot of people don’t run contests on their Facebook page.

They either don’t know where to start or they’ve heard there are so many rules around them that they don’t even bother.

You Don’t Need a Big Budget for a Successful Contest

Even if you have a small budget, you can run a successful Facebook contest that generates great leads for your business.

The following is a case study where I consulted with a client who ran a contest for less than $17 which produced 51 new leads.

Corset Connection Contest Case Study – Leads for $0.33

When it comes to running a Facebook contest, the first thing you need to decide is your goal.

Do you want more leads?  More fans?  Introduce a new product? Brand engagement?

Once you have your goal you’ll want to decide on the type of contest you want to run like a sweepstakes, essay, photo or video.

My client wanted to generate leads with a small-budget contest and because of the nature of her business (corsets), we decided that she’d run a photo contest around Halloween costumes (one of their most popular times of year).

I suggested she set it up so people would submit photos of themselves in their favorite Halloween costume and fans of her Facebook page would then vote on their favorite costume.  The winner got a free corset up to a certain value.

In order to enter your photo in the contest, you had to give your email address (her lead generation).

Note: All of this happens through a custom app on her Facebook page, which I’ll get to in a second.

Her fans loved it!

For her first contest, my client was really pleased with the results:

Total cost for the contest: $16.88 (+ the cost of the corset prize)

Leads generated: 51

Cost per lead: $0.33

Contest duration: 2 weeks

Importance of Following Facebook’s Guidelines

As I mentioned, Facebook has clear policies for how contests can be run.

So before you run one, be sure you’re familiar with them.

Here are some highlights:

                        • You need to run the contest through a 3rd party application.  The app takes you through step-by-step in creating one that’s right for you.  My client used Wildfire, and there’s others like ShortStack.  Both are easy to use but I prefer ShortStack.

                        • You need to have contest rules in place.

                        • Fans can’t vote through a Facebook action such as commenting, sharing or “liking” a photo.
